Q. I am getting very slow connections to some web
sites, especially in the evening. What is the problem?
A. If you are getting a slow connection to just a few different
sites, especially search engines, then the problem is most likely
with those specific sites. There is really nothing that you can
do about this sort of problem because it is entirely in the hands
of the administrators of that site. Sometimes e-mailing the webmaster
of the site will draw a response.
Q. I am getting very slow connections all of the time to the Internet.
Graphics are slow to load and I am getting generally slow performance.
A. There are very many potential bottlenecks when dealing with the
Internet, so it is important to look at each one in turn.
1. The Modem Bottleneck: Your modem is usually the number one
problem with regards to Internet performance. Although the Alliance
Link pages were designed with the intention or minimizing download
time, not all sites take the same precautions. Upgrading your modem
to a V.90 modem will help considerably.
2. The Computer Bottleneck: Sometimes, your modem may not be the
main problem. If you have an older computer with an operating system
that is too large for it to be comfortably run, you may have some
problems. For example, a computer running Windows 95 on less than
16 Megabytes of memory can be much slower than running Windows 98
with 32 Megabytges of memory. However, Windows 98 and Windows ME
have very good built in communications and are therefore a better
choice for any computer with 32 Megabytes or more of memory or any
Pentium, Pentium II or Pentium III processor
3. The Site Bottleneck: Certain sites are often overloaded due to
their popularity. Sometimes the usage on these sites slows them
to a crawl. |
