Setting up your personal Web Pages.

Step 1: Contact us

The first thing you need to do is contact us with the name of the directory in which you would like to place your files. All personal web sites are found in the /users directory on the Alliance Link server; an example of a personal web site address is http://www.alliancelink.com/users/username/. We need to know the name of your directory so that we can create it on the Alliance Link server. Directory names should be ten or fewer characters, although there is no set limit. We will also provide you with a name and password to access your file.

Step 2: Prepare your web site

After you have contacted us and we have prepared your directory for use, you will need to begin the creation of your web site. Your site will consist of one or more Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) files and associated supporting files, such as graphic and sound files. The only restriction on the naming of your files is that there should be a file in each subdirectory named Default.htm. This is the file that will display automatically when a user enters the URL http://www.alliancelink.com/users/. If there is no Default.htm file, the user would see the error message "Access Denied." Other than this restriction, you can name and place your files however you would like, including making your own subdirectories (folders).

Step 3: Find a FTP program

In order to upload files to the Alliance Link web server, you will need to have a FTP utility. The table below lists some popular FTP programs and where it can be found on the Internet.

Program Name

Website

WS FTP

http://www.ipswitch.com/

FTP Commander

http://www.internet-soft.com

Step 4: Begin the upload

At this point you are ready to begin the upload of your web site. The procedure varies with each FTP program, but there are some common settings you will need to make.

Username

This is the username that we gave you when you requested your directory.

Password

This is the password that we gave you when you requested your directory.

Host or Server

ftp.alliancelink.com

Initial Directory

/users/username/ where username is your username

Each program is different, but with some practice you should be able to move about your directory easily.
